Addressing a unique set of challenges

The global standards for analogue video are long established and deliver full interconnectivity and interoperability between manufacturer’s products. IP cameras and network video solutions do not however currently benefit from a global interoperability standard. As a result the exciting potential for the migration from traditional analogue systems to IP network video solutions is restricted.

The proliferation of IP network video solutions presents a unique set of challenges for both end users and system integrators alike. At a systems integration level the wide range of product on offer can often be limited in its application by the differing standards for image compression and network video transmission found from manufacturer to manufacturer.

This lack of a unified standard defines an obvious limiting factor in the global deployment of fully integrated network video solutions. As a result we restrict customer choice and are unable to fully realise the clear benefits on offer from the wide spread use of this technology.

In recognising cross manufacturing compatibility as the key to wide spread adoption of network video solutions, SONY along with a number of leading manufacturers has pioneered the establishment of ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum).

The development of a worldwide open standard

Established in 2008, ONVIF is a worldwide industry forum encompassing manufacturers, developers, consultants, systems integrators, and end users and is open to any group interested in furthering the goals of the organisation.

ONVIF is committed to promoting the adoption of network video solutions within the global security market. Focussing on system interoperability, the development of a Worldwide open standard is the forums primary mission.
